Jean de la Cassière · gold zecchino

Undated; magistracy 1572–1581 in the specimen catalogue · Order of St John — Jean de la Cassière

The Grand Master kneels before Saint John, who presents a banner. Christ stands within an almond-shaped frame on the reverse, surrounded by nine stars in Morris’s illustration. A separately catalogued surviving gold coin confirms the zecchino denomination.

The 3.42 g observation belongs to Künker auction 315, lot 7189, not to the coin engraved by Morris. No nominal weight, fineness or diameter is inferred. The illustrated legends are not supplied as a fully verified transcription.

This entry groups a denomination and metal under one Grand Master. Dated examples, die differences and later countermarks are not additional base types. A historical engraving records its author’s example; it is not a modern photograph or an authentication guarantee.

A documented specimen

This weight describes the auction specimen only. It is not a nominal mint standard or a measurement of the historical engraving. The auction photograph is not reproduced.

Dating and classification

The coin is undated. Künker’s first-hand specimen catalogue gives the magistracy as 1572–1581; Morris’s older chapter heading uses 1572–1582. These are historical classification intervals, not an annual minting list.
