Hugues de Verdalle · copper four tarì

Documented example 1590; magistracy 1582–1595 · Order of St John — Hugues Loubenx de Verdalle

Morris identifies a copper four-tarì dated 1590. The Grand Master’s arms sit beneath a cardinal’s hat; the other face shows clasped hands with a star above and the NON AES SED FIDES motto. Later countermarked examples belong to this copper denomination family rather than creating new original issues for each countermarking Grand Master.

The source establishes copper and the four-tarì value, but supplies no nominal weight, diameter, fineness or total mintage. A later countermarked auction specimen corroborates the denomination and design; its altered weight is not used as a manufacturing standard. CNG’s heading starts the magistracy in 1581; Morris gives 1582. The latter date is retained, without transferring the auction heading’s chronology.

This entry groups a denomination and metal under one Grand Master. Dated examples, die differences and later countermarks are not additional base types. A historical engraving records its author’s example; it is not a modern photograph or an authentication guarantee.

Dating and classification

1590 is a documented example, not an exhaustive issue-year list. The magistracy interval is used for historical classification only.
